Pelikan Ink
This is an advertising poster for the ink bottle of the company Pelikan that was designed by the Russian Artist El Lissitzky in 1924.In the 1920′s he produced a series of advertising posters for the Pelikan company. The posters were meant for things like Ink, Carbon paper, Typewriter ribbons etc that were manufactured by the company.
Lissitzky extensively used a mehtod called Photomontage or Photogram. Photomontage is the process (and result) of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining a number of other photographs (wikipedia). This was in the period when Photoshop did not exist and the overlapping was done by hand. This image is made for the Pelikan Ink . Here, he used the inkpot, its lid a fountain pen and the name of the company all composed on one sheet as a poster. The word “TINTE” (ink) was written using using a stencil and black paint onto the completed photogram, which was then employed as one of the as one of the negatives for a large-format version in the poster design.
I feel that the message is very strongly conveyed here because of the contrast created using the thick solid letters which are in white colour as opposed to the darker body of the bottle.
I like the way the body of the bottle is shown blurred/in motion as is its lid. Also, the way in which the name of the company is shown, written by the pen which is also titled, probably in motion.
